Description of Site/Context

In 2011 STEPS in conjunction with the Western Australia Department of Education asked us to revise the STEPS Viewing Resource Book and the STEPS Viewing Map of Development and write the facilitator notes for publication of a second edition of the STEPS Viewing Materials.

Conduct of Sessions/Project

This task involved firstly negotiating and liaising with the team to identify the scope of the revisions and content to be added. Essentially both books had to be substantially rewritten to ensure the concept of multimodal texts was embedded and the codes and conventions of all five semiotic systems were detailed with examples. In addition the scope and sequence chart for the five semiotic systems had to be developed and incorporated into the Map of Development. Some of the rewriting was completed by members of the STEPS team and therefore there was considerable liaison work and negotiation during this period. Once the books were revised we then wrote facilitator notes and trialled a facilitator training course in three sites and after consultation with the team completed necessary revisions.

The materials were competed, trialled and published on schedule and are available for download at

We are accredited facilitators for the materials and can be employed to train your staff in using the materials most effectively.
