How can we manage change?
Teachers engaging in professional development in literacy need to know something about the concept of change management. Effective literacy professional development sometimes requires major change in classroom practice as well as an increase in knowledge about literacy. Such changes are challenging and staff need to be prepared for, and understand their reactions to change. We can provide sessions and workshops around this topic in order to facilitate change and prepare staff for their personal experiences with change.

Our experience with successful professional development indicates that real, long term sustainable change occurs when teachers engage in action planning. This involves teachers in identifying the aspects of their practice they wish to change, developing a plan for achieving this and validating and sharing outcomes. Action planning does not have to be daunting or involve large amounts of work. It can be as small or large as you want it to be and can be incorporated into your daily teaching rather than an additional task. The important aspect of action planning is that it ensures real engagement with the professional development and provides evidence of learning and change.
